Wordpress Installation and Configuration

Wordpress is a content management system
(CMS) that you can use in your website to create and publish contents to the World
Wide Web. Wordpress falls into the category of similar (CMS) like Mambo and
Joomla. Wordpress, Joomla and Mambo have a lot in common.

Download Wordpress

Wordpress is available for download for
free from WordPress website at www.wordpress.com
. You can install and run Wordpress from any machine running Windows/Unix as an
operating system of choice.

Wordpress minimum requirement

To begin installing and running
Wordpress, the following programs must be installed and configured first. These
are Apache, PHP and Mysql whereas Apache is your web server, while PHP is the
middleware application that handles communication between the server and the
client computers and vice versa. Mysql is the database management application
handling how your Wordpress data will be stored.

Note: All web servers have these programs
installed so there is no need to worry whether Wordpress will run.

Wordpress Installation

To install Wordpress easily and quickly you
will need an FTP Client and a Text Editor. For an FTP client you can use
Filezilla or any other FTP Client program you are used.

  1. Download and unzip the Wordpress
package if you have not done that already.
  2. Log in to your Wordpress control
panel and create a database for Wordpress, as well as a MySQL user who has
all privileges for accessing and modifying the Mysql Database.
  3. Rename the file wp-config-sample.php
    file to wp-config.php.
  4. Open wp-config.php in
your text editor and fill in your database details as explained in editing
wp-config.php to generate and use your secret key password.
  5. Upload the Wordpress files using
your preferred FTP program in the desired location on your web server:
  6. You can install Wordpress in the
root of your domain so that Wordpress is accessible at the root (e.g.
http://yoursite.com/). To do this, Move or upload all the contents of the
unzipped Wordpress directory (don’t include the Wordpress directory
itself) into the root directory of your web server.
  7. In the case where you want your Wordpress
installation in its own subdirectory (e.g http://yoursite.com/blog/), you
can create blog directory on your server and upload Wordpress to the subdirectory
    via FTP.
  8. Run the Wordpress installation
script by accessing http://yoursite.com/wp-admin/install.php in a
    web browser.
  9. If in any case you installed Wordpress
in the root directory, you should access your site by typing the following
    url: http://yoursite.com/wp-admin/install.php into your browser
  10. If you installed Wordpress in its
own subdirectory called blog, for example, you should visit: http://yoursite.com/blog/wp-admin/install.php

That’s it! Your Wordpress website should
now be installed and ready to rock.
